As we enter February once again, we are happy to stand beside and celebrate the LGBT+ community for LGBT+ History Month. We are passionate about positive mental wellbeing for everybody, including our LGBT+ peers.

LGBT+ people have always existed across time and cultures, but have continuously been more susceptible to experiencing poor mental health than their heterosexual and cisgender counterparts. Being LGBT+ by itself doesn’t cause these issues. They may be largely due to the unique difficulties they face due to their identities (whether that be from internal or external influences). For example, coming out is a daunting and anxiety-inducing decision for a lot of LGBT+ people to make. Self-acceptance and especially acceptance from others is something that many LGBT+ people have to struggle with during their lives, often leading to discrimination and isolation if they have difficulty gaining support. In fact, despite progress in social attitudes over the last few decades, many do still face widespread (often covert) discrimination and stigma.

We can do our part to help the LGBT+ community by showing our support and acceptance for who they are. Though they may face issues specific to their identities, they ultimately wish to foster general positive mental wellbeing alongside everyone else. Showing our support can help them to embrace their identities to lead happier, healthier lives.

If you are LGBT+, remember that it is something to be proud of and to embrace, even though this can seem difficult at times. Our group is here for you if you want to talk to us about any issues. Everyone deserves love, support and respect, so we are happy to contribute to the support network for our fellow LGBT+ peers!
